ZAGREB, 11. FEB. 2016 – New Croatian Minister of Foreign Affairs Miro Kovac pointed out that Croatia will support all countries in the region seeking to join the EU, but will also insist on the meeting of established criteria. In an interview with Deutsche Welle during this week’s visit to Berlin, Kovac said the government had found the country’s foreign and European policy to be in an unsatisfactory condition and added that Croatia would have to do much more in European cooperation and strengthening the transatlantic aspect. Speaking about relations with neighboring countries, Kovac said that Croatia had to reposition itself as a bridge between the EU and the Balkan countries that wish to join the EU. He also underscored that Croatia “has a truly great responsibility, but also a great chance” as regards those countries. Zagreb, as Kovac put it, “will actively argue for Bosnia and Herzegovina’s candidacy for membership of the EU.” “Where other countries are concerned, and I’m referring to Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Albania and Kosovo, we will certainly support their joining the European family too. Of course, we will insist on the fulfillment of criteria. We will be strict, but fair,” said Kovac.
