BELGRADE, 03. AUG. 2016 – The Serbian Commissariat for Refugees and Migrations wared that ahead of the 21st anniversary of the Croatian Army and police Operation Storm in the mostly Serbian inhabited Krajina, “an intense anti-Serb propaganda is being conducted in Croatia and the Ustashi movement is being glorified, thereby an atmosphere is being created which is driving the region back to the ’90s” tensions. According to the Commissariat’s figures, during Operation Storm, 250,000 Serbs from Krajina were driven out and 1,856 were killed, while 836 are reported as still missing. In a statement, the Commissariat said that in 20 years since Operation Storm, the return of the Serbs to Croatia has been sporadic, while Zagreb “is doing everything to prevent their return from happening, by constantly creating tension and stirring up nationalism.” According to the Commissariat, Croatia has not repaired the destroyed property of Serbs, it has not returned the confiscated farmlands to the owners, nor has it implemented the constitutional law on the rights of the minorities, which guarantees to the Serbs proportional representation and employment in the state administration and other public institutions. “These acts clearly show that the only option of the refugees is their integration in Serbia, given that the return process has almost been halted,” the statement said. “It is best proved by the recent rehabilitation of Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac, the annulment of the ten-year sentence on Branimir Glavas for the murder Serbian civilians, the erection of a statue to Miro Baresic, the nazi Ustashi assassin of Yugoslav Ambassador to Sweden Vladimir Rolovic, pro-Ustashi provocations of Serbs during the celebration of Uprising Day in Croatia,” the statement said.
