ZAGREB, 07. JUNE 2016 – Croatia plunged into its biggest political crisis in decades after squabbling leaders of the two former coalition partners refused to resign from their ministerial positions as requested by the prime minister. The Croatian government effectively fell over the weekend after the main centre-right party, the Croatian Democratic Union, HDZ – which is a part of the ruling coalition – announced that it was withdrawing their support for Prime Minister Tihomir Oreskovic. The announcement signalled the start of a frantic race for political control over the government, or to establish of a new one – a contest which will play out in the coming few weeks and may lead to an extraordinary elections. The crisis is a consequence of months of gradually worsening relations between the two partners in the ruling coalition, the HDZ and the Bridge of Independent Lists, Most. The HDZ’s political counter-attack came after Oreskovic on Friday called upon the leaders of the HDZ and Most and their deputy premiers in the Croatian government – Tomislav Karamarko and Bozo Petrov – to resign from their positions to enable the government to keep working without disruptions.
