ZAGREB, 14.OCT. 2015 – Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic has stated that Croatia will have to erect a fence on its border in order to protect itself. “I do not wish Croatia to find itself in a situation where a large number of people are entering (refugees and migrants), while the borders of neighboring countries are being closed. I think that some kind of fence or physical obstacle will be needed in the future. But do not call it a wire. Do not compare it with Srebrenica or with concentration camps,” Grabar-Kitarovic told the Jutarnji List daily. She said that she would “like this to be avoided”, but that she did not see how else the country could be protected in the future, adding that she was against the closing of official border crossings. “I have been saying since the very start: absolute control and control of the border, for which the Armed Forces and the police have the capabilities and equipment,” the president said, reiterating the statements because of which she was attacked earlier by the government of Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic. The government opposes setting up fences and the engagement of the military at the border with Serbia because of the inflow of large numbers of refugees.
